Description

Story of HipHop & Breakdance: Get the original artwork from the dances HipHop & Breakdance, the most popular dances and music styles of the last 50 years. HipHop is a genre of popular music that originated in New York City in the 1970s. It consists of stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. This year HipHop is celebrating black history and their 50th anniversary on August 11th. Read more about the story here.

Artwork creation process: Our HipHop dancer and B-boy Anjum Shah, became our human brush in this masterpiece, performing live in front of an audience in the UK. His dynamic and fast movements were captured on camera during his performance and did these dances true justice. Each hand, head, and footprint was captured on a graffiti prepped black base, representing either the floor of a club or the asphalt street and the so called street-dances. The break-dancer did head spins on the canvas as part of the performance, while his feet would get dipped into luminous tempera paint. Anjum was able to extend this artwork beyond our expectations and used almost his entire body, for his performance. While some areas show his sneakers, other areas display partial hand or head prints together with a breathtaking luminous color composition. At some point of his performance Anjum shares his passion for teaching and pulls founder Sanaz onto the canvas, improvising a dance choreography with her, characteristic for this socially inclusive dance. These details combined with the dynamic movements of our dancer, draw the audience closer to the artwork and capture their attention. The outcome is a unique artwork full of contrasts between the base color and vibrant splashes, leading to fascinating abstract patterns, which resemble a marriage of Yves Klein’s and Jackson Pollock’s masterpieces. The magic of dance and movement is captured and immortalized in this artwork, acting as a reminder of the simplest joys of life.
